Portugal Takes The Lead

After yesterday’s 6 rounds, BALEAL (Manuel Oliveira, Jorge Cruzeiro, Nuno Paz and Paulo G. Pereira) took the lead with 178 VPs, closely followed by RAPP (Goran Petersson, Calle Ragnarsson, Anders Palmgren and Jan-Olov Andersson), just 3 VPs behind.

DRAGÃO (Jose P. Sousa, A. T. Lopes, A. V. Lopes e Neide Vide) and ELAIELES (Mário Reis, Carlos Pimenta, Paula Lima e J. P. R. Pinto) are 3rd and 4th with 158 and 157 VPs.

BALEAL was unstoppable today. They won 5 of the 6 matches (25-4, 18-12, 25-4, 16-14 & 20-10) and conceded 15-15 on the 7th round against CABRIOLE (these first hands after dinner…).

RAPP won 4 and lost 2 matches to BALEAL and DRAGÃO.

Bridge Base Online had Table 1 (closed room) live since round 7. It featured BALEAL and RAPP twice and DRAGÃO and CABRIOLE once each. All three rounds today will also be broadcasted.

The first four teams are only separated by 21 VPs.

ELAIELES have a shot at recovering the difference when they play against RAPP on the first round.

Will BALEAL manage to keep their lead?

Will any of the others overtake them?

Who will be on the viewgraph?

The answer will shortly follow.

"The Important 10 of Spades"

By Jan de Winter

In the teams, my partner Win Hink, played a nice 6 NT against the team of Nuno Matos.

He opened 2 NT wich is 19-20 and I said 6 NT with my 13 points. Sometimes it is a bitt high but Win is a good player, what he soon would prove.

The lead was Qª , ducked to rectify the count, now came the Jª . Win cashed all his winners ending up in the position:

In the dummy the K
© was led and now followed a small heart, small and up came the A, assuming that a finess wouldn’t work, and down came the Q for the contrac

The view from Baleal
Baleal, for those who don’t know, is a small village by the sea at the centre of the Portuguese mainland. The team that led most of the event, and still does, is named after that village, where they spend a few days of hard work per year. Hard work at the beach, hard work at lunch and dinner and hard work with the wine and the snacks… But they also take some time between all the hard work to play some bridge. Here’s one deal from the afternoon’s session that shows some of their prowess.

Manuel Oliveira, sitting South playing against the Rapp team, knew from the auction that his partner only had 2 Hearts, but he expected him to have J10 or Jx. Since he thought that 5¨ would probably be in danger through a trump promotion after three rounds of clubs. He also expected his partner to hold the ª A, and so decided to try his luck in 4© . The lead was the § A, followed by King and Queen. Declarer ruffed with the © J, played a Heart to the 9 and claimed 11 tricks. Well done! 13 imps to Baleal when the opponents on the other room landed in 5¨ , loosing the obvious 3 tricks.

LIVE IN THE INTERNET

The boards of table 1, in the closed room, will be broadcasted live in the Internet.

It will be possible to watch them through Bridge Base Online. Viewers can download the program from www.bridgebase.com

This table will begin at the same time as the others and will play the first two boards. Then, they start playing the other boards that have been played in the open room.

Viewers will know the results before they see the boards being played.

This was possible with the help of our friend Henry Schweitzer.
