 WELCOME TO MADEIRA 2004

7th International Bridge Festival

Hanging in there

Yesterday, Ants Olev and Jaan Linnamagi won the session with 61.13%, closely followed by Knap and De Miguel with 59.73%.

Koetser ad Bouscher were third with 59.54%. They jumped from 47th to 18th place overall.

The general ranking had some changes but Olev and Linnamagi kept their lead with a close 1.83% advantage on Knap and De Miguel.

Tiago Canelas and Nuno Matos, who were 6th on the first session, rose to the 3rd
place with a 58.60% average.

The first three pairs are only 6% appart. The first 7 have less than 9% difference, so, anything can happen in the third session.

Will Olev and Linnamagi be able to keep their first place?

Will any of the other pairs manage to get into first place?

The advantage is short. Today’s session will establish everything… Let’s see…

CHAOS
Right on Board 1. of the second session the fireworks started. Scores ranged from +2200 to –500, the average being around +100. The +2200 came on an auction were EW seemed to have things well in control, but quickly everything got out of hand.

(1) Multi-coulered : weak in ª or ©
The Romanians Dan Stratan and Radu Mihai had a nice way to deal with this messy hand. After a weak 2© opening E leapt to 4§ which meant a six card suit and 5 cards on the other major (spades in this case). Partner could now know that all his honours in the red suits were almost worthless and gave up in 4ª . Minus one (-50) earned them 40 of 54 matchpoints.

The chaos continued on deal 7. This time results varied between +1400 and –1430. There were two pairs playing 7NTx and going 5 down on a club lead. Another EW did better by redoubling (!!?). Yes, after the redouble he got a diamond lead going only 1 down for minus 400. Only two pairs reached the unbeatable 6¨ slam, but twelve managed to escape a diamond lead in 6© or 6ª making 1430.

There’s more of the same later on, so… be prepared.

On the first session, sitting West, Nuno Paz picked up the following cards on board 22:

(1) Game Forcing
Nuno tried the grand slam with 6§ , but Paulo Gonçalves Pereira believed that only the ¨ A mattered and so skipped the diamond cue-bid signing off in 6© . This is not an experienced partnership so Nuno, not very sure about the bidding, thought his values were surely enough for a grand slam facing a game forcing openig bid and bid 7© . South doubled and led the ¨ A. 200 for NS and a bottom for EW.

On the second session, on a similar auction, Nuno had a chance for revenge. Sitting South he held (board 7.)

(1) Game Forcing
When West made a Grand Slam try with 6§ Nuno read well that he could not have an accurate picture of partner’s hand and so went for a 7§ sacrifice. Things turned out well when West guessed wrongly by bidding 7ª , giving Nuno the chance to double and lead the ¨ A. The reward was even greater when P.G.P. ruffed the diamond continuation and locked declarer in dummy with a club. Declarer could have escaped for –500 if he had discarded a x© and ruffed the third heart in hand to draw the last trump, but who can think clearly in such a situation?
800 for NS and a near top. The revenge was consummated.

Card reading.
Nuno Matos and Tiago Canelas ended up in third place after last afternoon’s session. Tremendous reading helped get there. Take board 13.

They are playing a somewhat thin Small Slam in spades. After a lead directing double by E, W dully led the
¨ Q. West won with the Ace and returned the Jack (the 9 or ten would be better). Tiago, sitting South now placed E with 6 cards in diamonds and promptly decided to finesse the trump Queen trough West. Since he decided to do that he also calculated that a 4-0 split was more likely than a singleton Queen offside. Accordingly, he played the © A at trick three, ruffing a heart to come to hand and successfully ran the ª 10. When the clubs behaved, 12 tricks were there for a cold top.

Nuno wasn’t to be outshone by his young partner, so when he found himself playing 4
ª on board 15 he also had to do some card reading.

Sitting North, he won the heart lead with the Jack and played a spade to dummy’s Jack and West’s King, noting the fall of the 8. West returned a diamond that Nuno won in hand. Now came a heart to the queen, the
© A pitching a club from hand and a spade to the 7! Now it was safe to play a club to the king and another spade from dummy. A nice +620 for NS.
